Lesson plan

  1. Lead-in

Students discuss what they know about Harry Potter, Hogwarts, and the story — a great way to activate prior knowledge and get teens talking.

  2. Characters

Students meet the eight main characters and match pictures to names.

  3. Vocabulary

Students read and discuss ten key words from the story — wizard, spell, broomstick, scar, and more — and use them in sentences.

  4. Video Part 1 (0:00–2:40)

Students watch the first half of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 5 Minutes, focusing on key story events and target vocabulary.

  5. Comprehension Part 1

Students choose the correct statement from three pairs based on the first part of the video.

  6. Video Part 2 (2:40–5:01)

Students watch the second half of the video and continue noting story events and target words.

  7. Order Events

Students put six key events from the second part of the story in the correct order.

  8. Speaking: Story Retell

Using a visual timeline and sequencing language (first, then, after that, next, finally), students retell the full story in their own words.

  9. Name the Character

Students read five character descriptions and identify who each one is.

  10. Game: Magic or Muggle?

Students decide whether each item — from a flying car to a robot vacuum — is magical or non-magical and explain why. Always a class favourite! 🪄

  11. Creative Writing

Students create a character, setting, and three objects, swap lists with a partner, and write a short magical story using the elements they receive.
