This ESL Lesson Plan In the City introduces A1 learners to basic vocabulary and expressions for talking about places and practise asking and answering “Where is it?” questions.

Lesson plan

1. Warm-up

   Students answer four questions about where they live, nearby places, and how they get to school.

2. Vocabulary

   Students match nine place words (bank, supermarket, hospital, park, school, café, cinema, bus stop, police station) to pictures.

3. Memory Game

   Students look at six pictures of places and try to memorise them, then close their eyes as the teacher removes items one at a time and students say what's missing.

4. Practice: Categorise Words

   Students organise sixteen words into four groups: park, school, supermarket, or bus stop.

5. Prepositions of Place

   Students learn prepositions of place (next to, in front of, behind, between, opposite, on the corner of) and how they describe position.

6. Practice: Reading the Map

   Students look at a map and identify which places are shown and where they are located.

7. True or False

   Students read five sentences about the map and decide if they are true or false, correcting the false ones.

8. Reading: Alice

   Students read a short text about Alice's neighbourhood and draw the places on a map based on the prepositions used.

9. Reading: Tom

   Students read a second short text about Tom's neighbourhood and draw the places on a map.

10. Listening

    Students listen to Emily describing her city and fill in the missing words.

11. Speaking

    In pairs or small groups, students take turns asking and answering five questions about their own neighbourhood, using useful phrases and sentence starters provided.

12. Writing

    Students write 5–7 sentences about their neighbourhood, using places in the city and prepositions of place.
