ESL Lesson Plan Let's Plan a Party A1 teaches the question words — who, what, where, when, why, which, and how many — through the theme of planning a birthday party. Students build vocabulary with a picture-matching exercise, practise forming and answering questions with a matching activity and a fill-in-the-blank task, then read a short emoji-illustrated story about a birthday party and answer Yes/No comprehension questions. The lesson also includes two speaking tasks describing party scenes, a writing exercise turning answers into questions, and finishes with "Funny Party" — a speaking game where students pick an option for each question word and build their own party idea to describe to the class.

Students look at a set of pictures and circle the items they might need for a party.
Vocabulary Introduction
Learners match nine party-related words (cake, food, present, music, candles, balloons, drinks, friends, games) to their pictures.
Question Words Presentation
Students are introduced to all seven WH-question words through a visual wheel with example questions for each.
Match
Students match seven questions about a party to their correct answers.
Complete the Questions
Learners look at given answers and choose the correct missing question word.
Writing
Students read a set of answers and write the matching questions themselves.
Reading: Leo's Birthday Party
Students read a short emoji-illustrated story about Leo's birthday party and say the word for each emoji.
Comprehension: Yes or No
Students tick Yes or No for ten statements about the text.
