ESL Lesson Plan Past Simple Regular Verbs A2 is Part Two of "The Past Simple House" series, focusing on regular verbs in the past simple. Students learn how to form the -ed ending, practise positive, negative, and question structures, and apply the grammar to the real story of how the sandwich got its name. The lesson combines a word search, spelling practice, short-answer speaking questions, and a story retelling activity using picture prompts.

  • Form the past simple of regular verbs using the -ed ending.

  • Recognise and fix common spelling mistakes in the past simple.

Lesson Plan

  1. Lead-in

    Students look back at the Past Simple House and its three floors, then focus on the First Floor — regular verbs.

  2. Grammar Presentation

    Students learn the -ed rule for positive sentences, and the didn't + base verb rule for negatives. Students learn the did + base verb structure for questions and short answer forms.

  3. Review

    Students complete a table with regular verbs, did/didn't, and pronouns to check understanding.

  4. Word Search

    Students find 8 base verbs hidden in a grid and write them down.

  5. Complete the Sentences

    Students use the past form of the verbs they found to complete picture-based sentences.

  6. Make the Sentence Negative

    Students rewrite eight sentences in the negative form.

  7. Short Answers

    Students ask and answer questions with short answers using did/didn't.

  8. Story Time: The Sandwich

    Students complete a story about how the sandwich got its name using the past simple form of the verbs in brackets.

  9. Retell

    Students use picture prompts to retell the sandwich story in their own words.

  10. Fix the Spelling

    Students correct ten incorrectly spelled past simple verbs.

  11. Memory Chain

    A speaking game where students build a growing chain of sentences using regular past simple verbs.

  12. Video

    Students watch Part Two of "The Past Simple House" video to review the lesson.
